| It was righteously unexpected. Ja invited us to watch the special red carpet premiere of "Twilight Dancers", which of course I was hesitant to commit to because it was mainly about macho dancers, which is of course not my caliber of interest (unless if you count the fact that Jo and I enjoy pole-dancing like any other macho guy wahahahaha!). One thing led to another, and the next thing I knew, I was sitting in a cinema packed with ladies and, well, you know. Aaaaiieee, kaloka!!!
Turned out it was a rather interesting movie. =)
Look at it in an educational perspective and you'll understand why. "Twilight Dancers" may be filled with macho dancers (and the rear nudity, the frontal semi-nudity safe from MTRCB censorships due to short linens draped in front of their, erhm, stiff(?!) crotches, and the sex scenes ahehehe), but it speaks more than that. This is one of those Filipino movies with a socially and politically-relevant theme at hand, which can only be beautifully and creatively relayed through the lives of the people who makes the Philippines well-sought for in the world - hustlers and sex slaves. Oh yes, Philippines live on incomes generated from the Sex Trade.
Screw OFWs. Prostitution marks 1st in the top income-generating industries of the country.
So what's the movie all about? Illegal trade. Corruption. Political killings. Workers' Unions. Sex trade. Immoralities made moral. Almost everything that is rampant in our country that people try to deny, or are really not aware of, though I doubt. This is Filipino society with its rawest stench. And it's best to point out through a movie everyone would surely criticize. I can already see the Church squeaming on their seats for such immorality (I can think of a better term than immorality, but my High School alma mater would probably then count me as an atheist).
My verdict? Watch the movie. Get out of those machismo shells, boys, and see the other side (though I must admit nahirapan din ako dito haha). This is surely something truly worth watching. |
